Default Exchange Server

When I try and set up and connect to an exchange server from my outlook my
computer inserts a specific outlook server (not the one I want to connect
to). I assume the techies did this so that most users didn't have to ask
tech support the server address.

This happens when I connect on the network at work and also when I connect
via the internet off the network so I suppose the information is in either
the registry of a file (the hosts file used to do this function).

Anyone know where I should look to find this setting?

I would look for a *.prf file. (Just so you know, the file is readable in
Notepad.)

Clearly this is the culprit as I found information in a .prf file that told
the program where to look. Is this file called from the registry or from
some other startup?

Will changing the contents of this file change the setup?

Thanks, I am miles ahead now.

Tom

Registry. See
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Setup. Value is
ImportPRF.

Changing the PRF will change how e-mail profiles are configured. Just
remember that the PRF file is only called once under first run conditions.
If outlook thinks it has ran, it shouldn't be called on again.

Thanks.

If I understand you, when Outlook originally set up it imported the .prf
values into the registry. As a result those values now control outlook. A
change to the values in the registry would change how Outlook/Exchange work.
I assume setting them to the default values would solve the problem.

Not quite sure what you are asking, but let me describe how this works.

Office 2003 is installed. New user logs onto system and launches an Office
(e.g. Outlook) app. Installer kicks in and populates registry. If the
ImportPRF key is there, Outlook reads the PRF to build the Outlook mail
account profile and then deletes the value from the registry. It should
never be called on again*.

* The only time it would be called again is if you logged onto Windows with
a different userid and deleted the user profile. This would trigger the
"new user" behavior.

I get that bit - the problem I have is I have to change some of the values.

I guess I could remove the reference to the prf in the registry, or change
the prf file, delete the user and then add back (so it is a new user).

Alternately I could change the offending registry items so I can do what I
am presently precluded from doing.

Is that correct?

Yes, those are your options.

Never as easy as it seems.

The Adminstrator on my computer does not have outlook set up. He can delete
my user however.

In the registrey there is a reference at:

HKEY_Classes_root/prffile/shell/open/command

There is a string that refers to importprf which is as follows:

Name - Command
Type - REG_MULTI_SZ
Data - ']gAVn-}f(ZXfeAR6.jiOUTLOOKFiles>ir@X7cr$%@u$}&V7{4p'
/PromptImportPRF "%1"

Is this what tells the computer when running Outlook for the first time to
call the *.prf file?

If I deleted the .prf file from the computer what would happen during set up?

Never seems as easy as it looks.

Nothing that I am aware of. What you are taking away is the ability to
allow a person to double click on a *.PRF file and then have Outlook process
the file. If you want more information about "first run", just search
google with outlook registry first run.
