I want to avoid having to pick a specific user when XP boots. Isn't there a
way to create a default user, so that XP opens to that desktop?

Hi,

Yes, you can use any existing account as the default account, or you can
create one and use it.

To set up the autologon: Click start/run, type "control userpasswords2"
(without the quotes) and click ok. Uncheck the box requiring a username and
password, click apply/ok and follow the prompts to set up a default logon.

Unfortunately, that didn't work. I get a messsage that states that the
"system couldn't log you on" "Make sure that the user name and domain name
are identical, etc." I am typing user name exactly as it is, but I don't
have any domain name. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Right-click "My Computer", look on the computer name tab, are you listed as
being part of a domain or as a workgroup. Unless you are part of a domain
(generally a work environment), then you should be on a workgroup. If you
are on a domain, you can't use the autologon.

Actually you can use autologon on a domain, but you have to enter the fully
qualified domain user name in the user name box. The format is
domain\user.
