Dear Tony,
Thank you so very much for returning to this post and posting the solution you eventually found. It helped me immensely with a similar problem I experienced with Excel 2007, when somehow my default cell format magically changed to Date on one of my very valuable, large-amount-of-time-invested spreadsheets.
I too was completely puzzled by Joachim's advice and could not make any sense of it.
I never would have thought to right click on Normal in the styles setting for this.
You're my hero.

I still cannot see "Format Template" anywhere on my ribbon, s

There is nothing in Help about "Format Template" eithe
Do you have "Format Template" in your All Commands
