I've downloaded and installed the Mozilla Firefox browser to try it out.
Now, I'd like to keep Firefox, but make IE6 my default browser.

But I can no longer make IE6 the default browser. Please advise

Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab, tick the box at the bottom about
default browser. It will ask you next time you run the program. And each
time it isn't the default.

1. Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults >
Browser > Select IE.

2. IE Tools > Internet Options > Programs > Internet Explorer should check
to see whether it is the default browser (check)

How to Make Internet Explorer the Default Web Browser:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=284456

PLEASE HELP!!
i have a reverse question, I want Iexplorer as default but any changes wont
stick (set prog. access and defaults, IE options and i even rehandled some
filetypes to IE from Opera (my only other browser). With all filetype
associations set to IE (or microsoft handlers) i still see the popup "IE is
not your default browser, would you like to..."(I checked the yes box)

I only need this to obtain CD keys too, im frustrated beyond!!

If trying to set your default browser via IE doesn't work, go to My
Computer, View, Folder Options, File Types (or Control Panel, Folder Options
depending on your operating system)

Scroll down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols, click Edit twice and
make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome

The same applies for URL:Gopher

DDE should be set to: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL

thanks jon but my URL seems to be already allocated to "rundll32.exe
shdocvw.dll,OpenURL" %l, a dll application used by internet explorer for
viewing pages. MHTML,HTML,MHT,HTM,XML are actually written wrong in 'file
types' list - some are missing "- no home" or "*" in dde not running and dont
know for sure which. anyone know a place like
www.FILESxt.com to get full extension lists (for print, printto, edit etc)?

re PA Bear
yes, opera 8 but its not an issue, i think. Something messed up several file
allocations (probably a trojan spammer masking as an "Iexplorer.exe" file, it
disbled win firewall and secrity centre too).
im up to date otherwise, im using the SP2 CD microsoft sent me (for i386
folder files) with the IE fix application from
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
plus off of the site jon kennedy posted. ill update more when anything turns
up.

Should we then assume you're running WinXP SP2?

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults (might
be found in your Start menu) > Default browser > ...

pabear thank you for your support but i already said in an earlier post i
tried using "set prog access and defaults" and others but they dont stick.

The proplem is probably within registry [i have a blank search companion,
user accounts, security center, help and support center and the icons for
file types are mixed up (the worst was.ICO or icofile was registered with and
actual icon file (instead of %1)also in file types some IE extensions like
HTML,shtml, xml, mhtml etc are missing program execution lines like "- no home"
or "*" in dde not running box and i dont really know whwich, or file types
are associated to the wrong programs as defaults, should i delete the html
types and rebuild them? ]
I tried to reinstall "windows"xp SP2 , i get an "access denied" window near
the end. I tried to reset registry permissions with a command file built on
subinalc.exe from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&DisplayLang=en
with no prevail

Windows version?

Are any other browsers (still) installed?

I FUMBLED ON A SOLUTION!!!
for the IE as default i had to reinstall win SP2 and it was okay. for all
the other crap [filetypes missing, ie search assistant blank etc.]follow this:

i couldnt find the string
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/classes
well classes was there but empty from the
HKCR/CLSID i copied the key name and went back to classes and right clicked
new-key and ALL the CLSID substrings copied to the location after that.

then [in an admin account, but works from user account too] start-run
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript
and everything WORKED!
i got back user accounts, windows media player, search companion, help and
support... Im a novice computer user and I beat MVPS who have been working on
this for 6 months! Im sorry I shouldnt be crass it might only be a temporary
fix but im really happy i didnt have to do a clean install. hope it works for
the rest of you.
