In file explorer when I right click on a ppt file (Powerpoint 2003), the
default action is "show" and not "open". How can I change it from "show" to
"open"?

Thanks for your suggestions!!

Hi Glen,

I tried both changing the file association and repairing file associations
but they do not work. The powerpoint file goes straight into "show' instead
of "open". This problem only happens on my notebook where I am running a
program called Presentation Director from ThinkVantage. I tried "detect &
repair" from the Help menu and that did not work because it said there was a
file from a network server that was unavailable.

Any other suggestions?

Hi,

Easiest way is this:

Changing a File Association, Repairing broken File Associations
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00355.htm

I'd go for the bit about manually repairing file associations.

If you right click on the filename in Windows Explorer and select properties
which program is set as the default for opening the presentation Is it the
full version of PowerPoint or the PowerPoint Viewer?

Hey Mike,

When I right click on the filename the default program for the file is the
full version of PowerPoint. The problem is that the default action is always
"show" and not "open". This problem is for all the ppt files in my notebook!!

What to try next? Tks!

Hi Steve,

I tried what you suggested - starting PowerPoint the long way and opening
from "File, Open." It didn't work, the problem is still there. By the way,
there is not just one problem file, all my ppt files are like this!!
Incidentally, I have successfully tried "detect & repair" from the Help menu
in PowerPoint and that did not work either.

What should I do next?

Thanks.

See if this works for you. In Windows Explorer, Click on Tools, Folder
Options, File Types, and scroll down until you reach PPT. Select it then
click on Advanced and change the Show option to Open and set as the default.

Hi Michael,

I am using Windows XP Pro and the steps you suggest (click on Advanced,
change to Show option) are not available in File Explorer, Tools, Folder
Options, File Types.

Anyway I have found out what is the problem. Even though the file
association seemed to be right, ppt files were actually opened by powerpoint
viewer. I found this out when I put my cursor on a ppt file - it showed
powerpoint viewer file. To solve my problem I totally removed powerpoint
viewer.

Thanks for your help Michael and also thanks to Glen Millar.

Bye!
