I am having a problem with the windows updste and WD2. It will report that it
is downloading and installing the updates, but on the home screen it says
that it still needs updated. I think something is blocking the update process?

Has anyone else experienced difficulty in updating?

Also, always try to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to see if your
WU/AU is working correctly - if the website doesn't work, then you know that
it is a WU/AU issue and not a Windows Defender issue.

High among them are proxy issues =)

If WU/AU works, then try the KB article.

I get the exact samething, it keeps saying my Windows Defender definitions
haven't been updated in 40 days, and clicked on check for updates and it said
it installed the new definitiions but still saying on home page havent been
updated in 40 days.
and i have my Xp set for automatic updates, and it doesnt pop up so i went
manually to the http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and click express and
there was a file to download the defender definitions so i clicked installed
and it supposely installed it, but opening defender still tells me hasnt been
updated in 40 days. already removed defender once already, thought i would
give it another try, i guess it still doesnt work, hope you fix this bug...
cus its just doesnt work, so looks like i will have to remove it, til you
people at microsoft can fix it.. unless there another solution to this,,,

Hi Bill,
I was having a problem with trying to update with definitions KB915597.
I would download and install and then it would report it as a successfull
update.
But when i would go back to the WU site, this particular update would be
listed again.
The signature version in Windows Defender still showed the old version after
updating.
I tried the resolution in KB915105 and it worked for me. It now shows the
new signature version in Windows Defender. If I go to the WU site, this
particular update is no longer listed.
Thanks

Thanks for the report--glad you found the help, and that it was effective!

What happened? Did you get an error message?

Here's another route:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup tool, then run it from
the start menu.

Look for Windows Defender signatures--remove that.

Then retry the update process--try it both ways--using Windows Update, and
going to Help, about, check for updates within the program.

This worked when nothing else did. I downloaded and removed the Def file and
re-updated using WD2 and all is good. Thank you!

I have had to do this twice now about 2 weeks apart.
When I run the Installer app. I do not get a list to choose from.
The program just runs.
After that I have to run Windows update to get the lastest updates.

I'm not certain I understand the steps you are taking.

Installing the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility doesn't run it--you need to
go to Start, All Programs, and select it from the list.
