Deep Scan

The deep scan takes about 45 minutes on my computer. I
changed the selection on the schedule to NOT run the deep
scan when scheduled scans occur. I then saved this
change. However, after I close the machine down and then
reboot it, the "deep scan" box is, once again, checked.

If I'm having this problem, I assume others are as well.
Is there a fix for it?

Thanks, jfk

You might try a repair/update install.

start, control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware, change,
update.

This doesn't, in fact, do an update in my experience, but it does what a
repair install does for other apps--see if that helps.

(and there is, in fact, a repair install, hidden in the "support" link in
add or remove programs--but I believe it is going to do the same thing--feel
free to try both if one doesn't work--if one works and the other does not,
that'll be interesting news!)

Make absolutely certain that no AV software nor any other
antispyware programs are running a scan of your system at
the same time that MSAS is trying to run its scan.

I did this about two months ago with Ad-Aware and MSAS
and both took about twice as long to complete their scans.

You also might want to try a suggtestion from Andre Da
Costa in response to another problem regarding real-time
protection agents, if this doesn't work for you:

Application Notes:
Registering a VB6 dll seems to fix missing agents:
1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without
the quotes).
3) Close and re-open Windows AntiSpyware
4) If that fails, install VB6 runtime files:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/vbrun6download.htm

The above address can also help fix the 100% issue when
running a full system scan, which might be part of the
problme you are experiencing.

Thanks for the advice... I'm most appreciative.

I did 1-3, and the problem persists: I set the MSAS
schedule to NOT automatically run a deep scan,
click "change schedule, close MSAS, reopen ... and the
schedule is NOT set to automatically run a deep scan.
However, if I turn the machine off and reboot, the
schedule is back to running a deep scan. In short, I
can't get the change in the schedule to "stick" once I
turn off my computer.

I downloaded the vb6 runtime file you suggested. My
question? Where, when prompted, should I save them ... in
which folder, or does it make any difference.

Thanks for the help... it is really appreciated. Oh, and
given your email handle, welcome back hockey.

FWIW, I think at this point I'd recommend uninstalling Microsoft
Antispyware, deleting the installation folder and all subfolders (i.e.
\program files\microsoft antispyware) and then reinstalling Microsoft
Antispyware.

You will lose all settings, and access to any quarantined items.
