If anyone's looking for a truly dedicated, moderated freeware
discussion room, I have just created http://freewareforum.cjb.net/ .

Unfortunately, I need someone to join!

The very first people to join may, and I stress "may", be given
Moderator Status.

I encourage you to leave feedback in the General Chat area of the
board.

Thankyou for your support.

NB. I will not be monitoring this topic. Leave feedback on the site.

What's wrong with using this news group to discuss freeware?

It's not moderated. There aren't graphical smilies, and
alt.comp.freeware isn't split into different sections and given a
nice, graphic layout.

And now freewareforum.cjb.net has been upgraded to an ad-free, phpBB
board!

Those all sound like tremendous reasons to stay right here instead of
going somewhere else to me.

Does anyone else see irony in the fact that the board being lauded was
previously "adware?" <g>

Some newsgroup characteristics depend on the reading software. For
example, OE-Quotefix supports smilies. Newsgroups *can* be moderated
and *can* be split into different sections. The graphical layout
depends on the newsreader. I find HTTP to be an awkward protocol for
managing discussions.

I find it awkward as a user. I also dislike registering and moderated
forums. discussion. For discussion forums, nothing is even close to News
Groups. Graphics are just a slow-down and a distraction.
