Decrease File Size with Pictures

I need to decrease the file size of .ppt files which
contain numerous pictures.

I'm able to reduce each picture size in bytes by changing
the Image type from True Color(24bit) down to 256 Color
(8bit) thru MS Photo Editor.

However, each time I reduce the size (in bytes) of the
picture, the size of the .ppt file increases in byte
size.

I have turned off AutoSave from Tools|Options but still
experience the increase in size in the .ppt file.
