Decommissioning DC

I have a single forest, single domain.
Windows 2000 AD with 2 DCs.

Due to ageing hardware I need to decommission the server acting as the main
DC and replace it with a new server.

Can someone recommend a tech doc that relates to this situation and
procedure? Or can someone share their expertise and recommend how to safely
and properly proceed?

I'm mgmt, years away from hands on so my tech skills are
rusty, so I apoligize for any incorrect syntax in the explanation.

Let me know if there is further information needed before posting a
recommendation.

Thank you,

zaw

Hi

Assuming that you have 1 Forest, 1 Domain, 2 Domain Controllers, and you're
planning to demote one of the DCs and place a new one in the Domain:

On the new DC:

- 1 Plug-in the New Dc and promote it to additional DC in an existent Domain
(run Dcpromo to achieve that).

On the DC that you're planning to remove:

- Check what FSMO roles are in the DC (the one that you're planning to
remove) if any transfer them to the new DC.

- Verify any FRS and/or DFS, DHCP, Wins, etc, dependencies; if necessary
transfer them to the new DC.

- If the domain controller that you are demoting is a DNS server or global
catalog server, you must create a new GC or DNS server to satisfy load
balancing, fault tolerance, and configuration settings in the forest.

- Use Dcpromo from command prompt to remove the DC, if you can't remove the
Dc using Dcpromo you can follow:

controller demotion

- Don't forget to manually remove the DC from sites and services
