I have a PC with a 500 Mhz processor that is so slow with XP it is basically
useless. Previously I had Windows 2000 installed. After one of the service
pack upgrades and the upgrade to the latest Windows Media Player the
machine became very slow.

I upgraded to XP Professional and things got worse.

I know 500Mhz is slow for the current market but that's all I can afford
right now. What configuration changes can I make to speed up the machine?

I recently installed WinXP on my parents pc which is a
Pentium 450Mhz and it runs very well. However, I had
problems upgrading from WinMe and ended up doing a fresh
install. I think that may have made the difference. If you
can save all important files and settings and feel like
doing a clean install, 500Mhz should be fine.

Right click My Computer go to properties go to the Advanced tab and settings
in the Performance box and set it to adjust for best performance. That
should help some.
