DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO START WINDOWS XP SO I CAN DO A
SYSTEM RESTORE FROM THE SCREEN BEFORE YOU LOG ON? I WAS
TRYING TO REMOVE A REMNANT OF NORTON ANTIVIRUS FROM MY
SYSTEM, I WAS TOLD TO REINSTALL IT AND THEN UNINSTALL IT.
IT DIDN'T INSTALL ALL THE WAY, SO I INTERUPTED THE
PROCESS. WHEN I RESTARTED MY SYSTEM, IT LOCKS UP AFTER
TRYING TO LOG ON A USER. I WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS A WAY
TO EITHER GET INTO SAFE MODE PRIOR TO LOGGING ON OR
GETTING TO SYSTEM RESTORE BEFORE LOGGING ON AS A USER SO
I CAN UNDO THIS RIDICULOUS MESS---HELP

Try hitting the F8 key while booting. This is supposed to
bring up a menu where you can select "Last Known Good
Configuration" to boot from.

A side note, I found on a Sony computer that the F8 was
redefined by Sony. In that case, F5 is used to bring up
that menu.

If you have an XP CDROM (not just a recover CD), you can run the recovery
console form the CD and modify individual files, assuming that you know
which ones to change.

Alternatively, from the XP CDROM you can do a repair installation, whihc
will refresh XP without changing user files or installed programs. However,
a repair will remove all windows updates, so you will need to re-download
and re-install them. Also, an OEM XP CDROM may not permit a repair, only a
complete re-install, whihc will erase all user files on the partition with
the operating system.

Have you tried contacting Symantec, the makers of all Norton products? I
have found that they are good about responding to user pleas for help.
However, they are not fast, sometimes taking over a week. You can also try
searching their support site, in case another user had a similar problem and
they already have a fix posted. One word of advice: Try to be as specific
as possible as to what you see on the final screen, and any error messages
you see.

When you turn on your computer, press and hold down F8
until the safe mode screen comes on, from there you will
have a list of options, select system restore and pick
your restore date, your computer will automatically make
changes from there.
Good Luck,
Bobbi
