Dead Pixel Guarantee

Hi,

Im looking to buy a 17" TFT but am concerned I will end up with one or more
dead pixels. Does anybody know of a manufacturer or retailer who offers a
"no dead pixel" guarantee?

I'm in the UK, so a UK retailer would be preferred.

There is more chance of Millwall winning the UEFA Cup than you finding an
LCD panel without at least one dead pixel.

My 15" LG screen has none, and at least 20 others i work with dont have any.

They must be winners tonight, because I've got three here (two laptops
and a desktop LCD). If the laptop I paid $4000 had any dead pixels, it
would have gone back.

If they wouldn't exchange it on the grounds of defective pixels, then I
wouldn't have been happy with my purchase and I'd have returned it
outright under the satisfaction guarantee and gone with another
manufacturer.

*shrugs*

I'm not sure why people accept defective products sold at full price,
but it seems people do.

That's one of the main reasons I've never bought an LCD monitor. I
couldn't live with one obvious dead pixel, let alone six or seven of
them. Every time I turned the LCD on, that would be the first thing
I'd see.

Unless or until manufacturers can guarantee zero obvious flaws in the
display, LCD isn't a viable technology for monitors IMHO.

I am not sure about in the UK but here in the states, you can goto CompUSA
and get their TAP onetime replacement warranty on your monitro. That would
cover any physical damage as well as any dead pixels.

Yes, but we mere mortals don't pay four grand for a monitor! Hell, I don't
even have that much in my chequing account!

That's for the whole laptop... LCD is 15.7" 1280x1024. I also have a
18" desktop (also at 1280x1024).

I spend 16-18 hours a day on my computers (desktop&laptop combined), so
I'm very willing to invest in the best for my eyes and ergonomics.

When I got my 17" about a year ago (with one non-obvious dead pixel), I
enquired as to the possibility of getting a guaranteed zero-defect monitor.
I was told that LCD panels were all graded and that most monitor
manufacturers didn't use the zero-defect panels. If I wanted zero-defect
then I was advised to search for a 'medical' grade monitor (presumably the
medical peeps are concerned about looking at somebody's MRI scan which has
strange dots!). Of course things might have changed over the last year.
My monitor (which is extremely good) is from Hitachi.
 
Most of the expensive 17" TFT LCD monitor models have no dead pixel on them.
If you shop for LCD monitor base on price, most likely you will get TFT LCD
with few dead pixels.

I've bought two laptops with dead pixels. Returned them both and got non-dead
pixel laptops. Don't take any bull about "eight dead pixels is company policy"
etc.

If they refuse the return on that grounds, the satisfaction or "no
questions asked" refund policy is usually the route to go.

I suspect that you are wrong. It likely will not cover the below threshhold
number of dead pixels.

Actually no I am not wrong, the reason I know is that I sold the things for
about 6 months while I worked there. The warranty covers everything, we
literally had people bring in monitors that had fallen off desks, kids had
torn, we even had one guy that had ran over his while moving! The warranty
can also be used to cover upgrades, we had people that had bought 2 years
worth and would bring them in every 18mo or so and get what they paid back
as store credit and go get a new monitor then just buy a new TAP warranty.

Yes it would. If not, it DOES cover falling off your desk even if it's
covered in shoe prints. Come to think of it, that solution might be
more satisfying anyway.
