Guys I hope you can help me.
I was trying to access a language learning CD which hung up the PC then
totally killed it.
On start-up I now have a black screen with a white band at the bottom, I
have tried to re-install XP from my CD but this only brought me back to the
same screen when it needed to re-boot.
I have so much stuff on here and only have not backed up to CD because I ran
out I really need to get this back.
Please can anyone help I'm close to pulling my hair out.

Cheers

I used this answer for another post
"You could re-install windows and there is no reason why you would have to
install any other programs, you need to carry out a repair install. But
before you do that you may be able to recover from booting with the XP CD
and enter the repair console, once you are at the prompt enter FIXBOOT /? to
check the usage and use the command. That should cure the problem, failing
that try the FIXMBR /? before carrying out the re-install."

The FIXBOOT option may work for you, have you tried to use "safemode"
tapping F8 just after the bios & before the OS starts to load.
