dead links to My Computer

The links to My Computer, My Network Places and My
Documents that appear in directory windows are dead.

No other known problems with system. I'm running SP 4.
Local hw shop want 10 days to troubleshoot and fix.

Is there something I can do on my own?

- What's the recent history of the machine?
- Scan your PC with an external virus scanner,
e.g. on www.antivirus.com ("free online scan").

Taking your cue I ran a full McAfee scan - latest version
and all turned up rosy.

I use the machine for games, email and other lightweight
things. I've had no problems but this.

I'm aware of two ways to fix this problem:

- Reload the machine.
- Do some advanced registry hacking. This will
***probably*** fix the problem but I can't guarantee it.

I recommend you wait for some further replies before
making a decision.
