I bought an 8 gb HD from ebay, and it went dead. The guy replaced it
so that's fine. But, is the dead hd worth anything? Should I just
trash it?

No, worthless. If the drive wasn't new, it wasn't even
worth the shipping cost in the first place as mechanical
parts have a finite *average* lifespan, a lifespan which
that age of drive has already exceeded.

If you like to play with magnets there will be one or two
inside.

actually it is worth something, if you have a wife or relative that like
crafts take the drive apart and use the platters to make a wind chime. As
funny and stupid as that sounds it works out to be pretty well.

Why trash it?
take out the platters
use them as the wheels
use the HDD case as the chasis
and make a car/truck
give it to your kid
