Hey. I've 4 computers set up in a network and for the past 2 months I've had
a dvd drive in one of them acting very strange. It's a Creative Labs 12x
that came with a dxr3. Sometimes it won't read discs and it always has a
different name ni the bios everytme it starts up. The name reads the same
but it should be all uppercase some times a # replaces a letter or number or
sometimes a letter will be lowercase. The drive is about 3 years old and has
had alot of use. Is it time to bin it and get a new drive or should I try a
firmware update.
As for the cd-rw, its in a different computer and since last week it spins
for about2 or 3 minutes before reading a disc, as for recording it destroyed
4 imation discs in 2 days, I'ev been using these discs with no errors for
over a year. What should I do with this drive? Its just over a year old but
the pc has a 2 year gaurantee. I couldn't be bothered calling out the
company that built the pc because it'll take a few weeks for them to come
out. I know because a storm fried the mobo after 3 weeks.
Thanks. Martin.

That storm that fried your mobo may'be done more damage than you
realize... just because a part works immediately after (another fails)
doesn't necessarily mean there isn't residual damage that will cause a
later failure.

Go ahead and update the firmware on the DVD drive... if you were going
to retire it anyway, what've you got to loose?

You might try cleaning them out if you suspect dirt, and do all the
other regular drive troubleshooting techniques like checking jumpers
on those and any other drive on same IDE channel, take voltage
readings of power supply 12V & 5V, and try swapping in different IDE
cables.

It sounds a bit odd that the CDRW drive "destroyed" the already-burnt
discs though, or were you trying to add sessions to them?

You might as well call the company up, if it takes that long then the
sooner the better... if these were junk parts they ought to be
replacing them, it was their gamble how long they'd last (when they
put a warranty on the system?). Then again if it's storm damage you
can hardly blame them for that unless they used a really junky generic
power supply, and even then you could blame but they'd deny.

I should've been clearer, I'm sorry. The cdrw destroyed the discs when
buringa dao disc. As for the quality of the parts, basically everything in
teh pc is ASUS. Its a Targa machine, not that I ever heard of them but with
the exception of the modem, ram, processor and heat sink everything is ASUS.
I'll try a firmware update on the DVD and see what happens. Now allI gotta
do is find a new firmware for it the deregions it. lol.
Thanks.
