Is it time to use DDR3 RAM? Their prices have come down a bit.... though
not as cheap as DDR2.

IMO, when the prices are pretty much the same I would use DDR3. The
advantages are just not that great. I haven't checked the prices lately, so
it may be close to being worth it.

So DDR3 is not significantly faster than DDR2? Thanks.

Nothing you would notice. Even benchmarks don't show any great performance
boost.

So what is the purpose? Why make it at all then?

Someone provided a slide at a trade show. It says, paraphrasing
a bit (because I doubt I could dig up the PPT slide again).

The memory industry cannot make money,
unless the memory standard changes every
18 months.

At the current time, DDR2 is being manufactured below variable
cost, while DDR3 earns money. There were recent announcements,
that some of the companies have reduced DDR2 production, but
only to reduce the magnitude of loss from making it. They
don't really expect to drive the price up by doing so, because
there is so much excess capacity in the industry. Many of the
companies are using 12" wafers, and when those fabs came on line,
the end result was barrels and barrels of inventory.

So DDR3 is what will keep them afloat, until the next standard
comes out.

You'd think eventually the industry would collapse,
and only a couple of the stronger players would survive,
and then the price of memory would shoot up again.

The problem is that you most of the motherboards can not support
ddr3.so you have to change the motherboard also.I agree with some of
the people above that the benefit is not so big.So i suggest to wait...
