Hi folks,
Just curious but is DDR2 merely faster or is there
a real difference in how it operates compared to DDR?
I have an extra DDR2 SODIMM and hope to use it in
a DDR SODIMM slot.
Thanks.
A significant difference, is a different operating voltage.
DDR is 2.5V or 2.6V, while DDR2 is 1.8V. No need to
smoke it.
DDR2 has programmable on-die termination (ODT), which is
a difference when compared to DDR. DDR relies on
some resistors located on the motherboard. I think
in both cases, the termination scheme is described as
SSTL.

If you look around, you can probably find a highly
technical tutorial, comparing the two technologies.
The ones here, aren't exactly what I'm looking for.

The main reason for creating new memory technologies,
is to make money for the memory companies. If that
did not happen, a lot of the companies would go
bankrupt. DDR3 is what is helping to keep some of
them afloat. They cannot be making a lot of money
on DDR2, as it is dirt cheap.
