I would like to add a 512 DDR memory stick to my PC, but I am insure which
type to buy. The memory currently installed in my system has 1 cut-out on
the gold side (slightly off center) but all the memory I have seen has 2
cut-outs. Would it matter if I bought the stick with 2 cut-outs?

Yes, "most likely" yours is DDR, and the type with 2
cut-outs is SDR, PC133, PC100, or older.

The spec for memory speed needed is determined by the speed
set by your motherboard, as a function of the CPU's front
side bus speed. One good alternative is to just buy higher
speed than you need, it will have a higher margin for
stability and potentially be reusable someday in a faster
system (if that system takes same type of memory, some shift
is happening now to DDR2 memory).

Providing details of your motherboard make and model will
help determine exactly what type you need, and the CPU
installed will futher narrow it down to what minimum speed
rating is *required*.

thanks.
I'm not sure what motherboard I have - but it's only about 12 months old.
The cpu is 1.8ghz. I've eventually opted for a PC2100 DDR 233 512mb for £50.

PC2100 = DDR266 i hope...

You HAVE to buy RAM with the same number of cut-outs as your motherboard
uses. The double cut-out will NOT fit your motherboard.

thanks.

If your machine comes from a major manufacturer you can look up the
machine on the crucial website. If it's a whitebox then just open it up
and read the board, what's so hard about that?
