DDNS Query on Win2k

We have around 1000 workstations which are setup on Win2k using
DHCP/DNS. I am assuming that the way DDNS works, it automatically adds
the hostname/ip address procedure from DHCP into DNS once a PC on the
network is powered on.

However for a few number of workstations the hostname/ip adress
registered in DNS is not correct and is causing quite a few problems
for us.

I remember that in the WINS days there used to be a utility which
could remove stale entries from WINS. There was also a command to
compact (pack?) the WINS database. Is there anything similar in DDNS ?

Can someone tell me whether this is a common problem or whether there
is a mistake in our configuration ?

Thanks,
Subho.

Good guess, bad assumption. <grin>

DHCP does this IF you configure it that way (radio buttons and check boxes.)
The Client machine can do this too if it is Win2000+

What do you mean "not correct"? Is it being registered at all?

When DHCP does the registration for older machines, it has
to use the configure (on the DHCP server) zone name.

Not really. There is scavenging (similar to WINS in some respects)
but that only works after the records expire AND if you enable it.

Probably a mistake in your configuration but you haven't
given us the actual problem -- what is supposed to register,
what is registered, how the clients domain name are set,
and how the DHCP is set for both registration and name.
Also, the client OS/version....
