DCs on different or same LAN

Hello,

1) Is it a MUST to have DC on LAN, or it can be anywhere on WAN (of course
assuming that client has TCP/IP parameters configured to reach DCs IP
address?
2) About 2 DC on the same LAN:
- The first one is Global Catalog and the other one should be just
BACKUP DC, in case of main DC`s failure.
Question: In case of main DC`s failure, can backup DC be promoted to GC, or
it should have been configured so BEFORE FAILURE?
3) May there be 2 GCs at the same time?

1) It can be anywhere on the WAN, but you'll get faster response time if you
have it close to the clients.
2) You can make it a GC whenever you want, but if you're just having two DCs
in a single-domain environment why not make both GCs?
3) Yes, and it's preferred.
