In a brand new, 2 server installation for my Windows 2000
Server Network Admin Class, dcpromo fails to add a second
server to a domain already existing on the first server.
We can ping the first server from the second in both IP
and domain name mode with positive results and the second
server sees both the domain and the original server
under "My Network Places", so I'm fairly sure network
hardware and IP are working. We ran this same set-up
multiple times last year with no problems. This year,
we're using new machines with Intel's D865GLC
Motherboard/Chipset;P4/2.8GHz,1GB RAM,10GB HDD) (vs the
Intel 810E,P3/800MHz,256MB RAM,10GB HDD last year) as
well as W2KS Service Pack 4 (this year) vs. SP3 last.
I've double-checked time sync as well as the
administrator password, etc. Any help would be
appreciated. B. Simpson, Crowder College, Neosho, MO

what error message are you getting when trying to promote the second DC.
Check Domain controller security and make sure that administrators are in
the Enable computers/users to be trusted for deligation.

Check and double check DNS entries and the IP config of
the secondary server. If you can ping it its there. Next I
would check security settings in the default domain policy
on the first server used to be referred to a master domain
controller back in the NT4 days.I couldn,t logon on to our
domain with XP machines till I allowed it in the Default
domain policy although all win 2000 machines had no
problem. Try running dc promo from the start run as
opposed the wizard. There,s supposed to be a difference!???
