Hello and thanks in advance for posting a reply.

We have a server that is the DC for the domain CPS. It is
runnig Windows 2000 Server SP4 on a Dell PowerEdge 2500.
It seems that the last couple of months, it has shut
itself down (gracefully) on some Thursday nights, though
not every Thursday night.

When I check the Event Log to see what happened prior to
the shutdown, I see a bunch of DCOM errors in Event Viewer
with Event ID 10003. I plugged the info into the Microsoft
KB and got article 290398. However that does not explain
why it shuts down. These errors occur at other moments
during the day and there is no problem, at least the
server does not shut down.

I followed the steps on the KB article but I am not sure
if the problem has been resolved. Please let me know if
there is anything else that I should be looking at since
this server is our file server and our print server as
well and it just can't go down every Thursday.

Thanks again for any imput you may have.

Enrique

Can you copy and paste the event log item into a newgroup message? In Event
Viewer, just use Properties then the copy button. Then paste into a message.

I am wondering if the message is the same one mentioned in this article and,
if so, what the CLSID if the server is.

Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The server is

Here is the error that keeps popping up every 30 minutes
or so.

Also, when I surf the web on this server, I get a lot of
Runtime errors that ask me if I want to debug. The error
is always a DLL initialization routine failed. Again, any
ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The actual error message:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10002
Date: 10/7/2004
Time: 9:43:40 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SISYPHUS
Description:
Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The
server is:
{00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
The user is Unavailable/Unavailable, SID=Unavailable.

Im my registry, I looked under the key
HKCR\CLSID\{00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} and found that it has a
Prog ID of Word.Document.8. In other words, something is trying to start a
Word server on another machine. That doesn't sound good! If it's a
non-interactive process (like a service), access will be denied. If it is an
interactive process, access will be denied unless you are logged in to the
console of the target machine using the same user name/password.
