DCM-202 firmware

D-Link has released a new firmware for the DCM-202 cable modem. The
firmware is supposed to enable the modem to use Comcast's Powerboost to
speed downloads. I'd like to install it, but I don't know how (and I
don't see instructions.) Has anyone in this group upgraded the firmware
of a DCM-202, and could tell me how to go about it?

You can not upgrade the firmware yourself. Comcast will upgrade once
they are happy it works on their network if they haven't already.


http://192.168.100.1/ will show you the configuration page. Try
dlink/dlink or admin/hitron if prompted.

Go to the following page and download the 2.01 firmware zip
file, it contains instructions and a TFTP application.

Also it would be a good idea to download the default
firmware too, now, just in case you find your modem can't
connect to Comcast anymore after applying the new firmware,
thus leaving you without an easy method to obtain the
default firmware.

I agree that this sounds like a good idea, but once the Comcast
upgrade is installed, is there any way to reinstall the old firmware?
I've installed the Comcast firmware and my cable modem no longer
accepts telnet connections, so I'm at a loss to see how I'd ever be
able to downgrade/upgrade again.

It's been long enough ago that I have deleted the original
replies in this thread and don't remember the details.
DCM-202 seems to be a DLink cable modem. It might depend on
how it's flashed, whether the flasher accepts reflashing
with the older firmware or not. Many will, some won't.
IIRC some might also be flashed via TFTP when they're
powered on, but I don't know enough about that modem to
know.

I've installed the Comcast firmware and my cable modem no longer
accepts telnet connections, so I'm at a loss to see how I'd ever be
able to downgrade/upgrade again.

I wonder if that's a bug or a sneaky thing Comcast did.

So you telnet into it to command the firmware download,
previous to this new firmware, but what if your TFTP server
was pushing the .bin already when the modem is powered on?
Some equipment check this during their boot.

You might complain to DLink and demand to know how to revert
back and/or to receive a replacement modem.
