DCDiag results

Chris Millette

I have a DC that is giving me troubles. I ran dc diag I
got the message "DsGetDcName returning information for
\\server.domain.com when trying to reach "loacalserver".

The netlogon service also failed.
The application log is full of 1202 errors and the system
is no accepting remote desktop connections.

HELP!
 
Its hard to help with partial errors. We would need to see the errors in
their entirety. Please post complete event errors and errors from dcdiag.
You should also run netdiag and look for errors. There is a utility that
will run several diagnostic utilities at once. You can download it from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd915706/MPSRPT_DirSvc.EXE.
This will give you several files to review for errors.

I have found several errors. One that stands out is in
the dcpromo log, it is looking for a DC and found an old
DC that has been demoted for months. it then goes on to
state that it did not find a DC. I did notice that DNS
did not install with the promotion, should I install a
secondary DNS? I have this huge CAB file full of
interesting data but don't know how to decifer it all.
 
Cut and paste errors from the dcdiag report and netdiag report. Check the DS
log, app log and sys log for errors. Remember to post full errors.

I would do the following things to help narrow your
problem down...

- Run DNSLint.exe to make sure all your records are in DNS
- Use nltest to verify the secure channel you may have to
reset it.
- dcdiag /e /v

This was the result from the dcdiag /e /v. I cannot find
the DNSlint.exe command.
Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\COMMUNITYBRANCH
Starting test: Connectivity
* Active Directory LDAP Services Check
COMMUNITYBRANCH's server GUID DNS name could not
be resolved to an
IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server
name, etc
Although the Guid DNS name
(04629b25-69bc-44f5-8a41-
9161471a844f._msdcs.community.com) couldn't
be resolved, the server name
(Communitybranch.community.com) resolved
to the IP address (172.16.2.2) and was
pingable. Check that the IP
address is registered correctly with the DNS
server.
