I have two PC's. One is a Gateway 500X, P4 1.5 GHz, 256MB RAM. The other is
a Gateway 2000 P5-166, Pentium 192 MHz, 80MB RAM. The 500X is a dual boot
between Windows 98SE, Windows XP Home, and Linux Mandrake 8.2. The P5-166 is
running Windows 95. I want to set up a network between the two machines with
a paralell cable. I can establish a connection between the two computers
with 98 and XP, but I can only share files in 98. I just want to start over
and set everythng up from scratch.

1. What operating system would be best on the Gateway 2000 machine? Note: I
want to use the Gateway 2000 machine for a storage system. It has a 310 MB
hard drive in it right now, with space for more. It also has removable
storage drives on it that I use. The OS has to be able to fit on that 310MB
drive, and I would prefer anything besides Windows, and
preferably something free, but anything will do. Whatever is easiest.

2. How would I get the machines to connect to eachother using that paralell
cable?

3. How would I set up file sharing?

4. How would I set up Internet Connection Sharing.

Thanks for any help

It would be far simpler, and more efficient, to buy a couple of
inexpensive NICs and a crossover cable. You may need to use the Network
Wizard to make an upgrade floppy for the Win95 PC so its TCP/IP stack is
more compatible, but in the long run, an ethernet LAN is just better
than any parallel cable network.
