Hey all,

I'm trying to upgrade one of our member servers to act as
a BDC by running dcpromo but it says it cannot contact the
domain controller.

This is confusing as I only connected this new machine
onto the domain 5 minutes before hand.

The DC is servicing user logon request to the domain and
is available because if I add a new user or change a
password it is recognised across the network.

I have also loaded the admin pack onto my desktop machine
but it gives the same message about domain controller
being unavailable, when trying the dns and/or active
directory snapins.

Is there a simple reason for this occuring or is it going
to be a bit more messy.

Hi Brad,

Is your domain a Windows 2000 domain or a NT 4.0 domain? Windows 2000
doesn't have the concept of a BDC, either it is a DC or not a DC. A Windows
2000 server cannot be a BDC in a NT 4.0 domain. If you have a Windows 2000
Domain, then you should verify the DNS settings are correct on the member
server that you are trying to DCPromo.

Thanks,

Yes it is 2000 and I just wanted to make it another DC.
The new member server is registered in DNS of the PDC but
do i need to install and run dns on the new member server
before I dcpromo. It also appears as a computer account
under the domain controllers OU in Active Directory.
