Hi,

I have an old server that was a DC and taken offline. It
has been reinstalled and being used for something else.
This old server was the Domain Naming operations master
and it says that I can't transfer the role since it has
been taken offline. Is there a way that I can manually
transfer this role. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks

Randy

Use ntdsutil to seize the role. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=255504

Simon, I hope that you do not mind if I add a little tip!

Randy,

Using NTDSUtil is a really great thing to learn how to
do. There are a whole lotta things you can do with this
tool. Can not remember if you need to install the Support
Tools ( best if from the WIN2000 Service Pack CD ) or if
WIN2000 comes with it already. I always install the
Support Tools on all my WIN2000 Servers right away!

Anyway, if you follow the instructions from the MSKB that
Simon posted you will have luck. There is just one
potentially confusing point: when you use the 'connect to
server XXXXXXX' you have to connect to an existing DC, NOT
the one that held the FSMO Role. And, you should connect
to the DC that you want to hold this FSMO Role.

So, if you have three DCs ( DC01, DC02 and DC03 ) and DC04
is the DC that was taken off line AND you want DC02 to
hold this FSMO Role then go to DC02, fire up NTDSUtil,
follow the instructions in the Article and use
the 'connect to server DC02'....There you have it!

HTH,

Cary
