We have a domain controller with only C: drive on it and
now we are facing problem that its running with very less
free space near about 200 MB is there any way to create
some space or to defrag the server as the data we cant
delete cos its very important. Please treat it on urgent
basis. Help will be highly appricable.
Thankx in advance.

One thing I've managed to do in a similar situation was to image the disk (I
used Norton Ghost) and put the image on a larger Hard Disk.

Of course you can compress as much data on the disk as possible, hunt down
temporary files that can be deleted, and trim as much of the fat from the
disk as possible.

How many domain controllers do you have? How about transferring all the
roles and ensuring this server is not the only GC and then dcpromoing it out
of the domain. You can then rebuild the server and dcpromo it back into the
domain.

From what you're saying, it sounds like there are other applications or data
on the server that's taking the space, rather than AD. If not, then it
sounds like whoever set the server up created a very small C: drive and as
such the server could probably do with a rebuild.

You could use something like Partition Magic to change the partitions
around, but I'd be very wary of doing that, especially if it's your only
domain controller.

Quickest thing would be to do the following:

1) Create a Restore point.

2) Remove any unnecessary files from the drive. Delete any files in the
"temp" directory.

3) Uninstall any programs you don't need (or can install on another server).

4) Reboot the machine and make sure everything is working properly. Files
are still in the Recycle Bin and you can recover if necessary

5) Use the "Disk Cleanup" utility (Programs\Accessories\System Tools) and
dump *everything* it shows. DON'T CHECK THE "Compress Files" OPTION!!

If that doesn't free up space, then install a second hard drive and move the
swap file/virtual memory to that drive.

Once you have this done, you need to really need to look at how to
re-configure your setup to avoid this. It's a **VERY BAD*** thing to have a
DC run out of room........................
