im wondering if someone could point me in the right
direction... im running a domain controller behind a
linksys dsl router... i tried setup the DC as DHCP and DNS
server but in doing this, none of my workstations get inet
access... i am currently pointing all 10 workstations' dns
to the router and static ip's via the router... it seems
if i make dns happy, no one gets out... if i make inet
happy, dns isnt... everything is communicating with the
server as far as network printers and shared folders... i
have been trying to create policies in active directory,
but they are not being applied due to dns, im sure... im
really better at thinking about this mess in my head than
i am writing it... i would be happy to answer any
questions...

Wrong way to do it -- point the internal machines DNS to
the Internal DNS ONLY -- (don't use an alternate that doesn't
hold the internal DNS records).

Then have the INTERNAL DNS server forward to the
ISP or DSL router if you wish.

Point the "Default Gateway" to the DSL router (or to any
intervening router that can reach the Internet DSL router.)
if i make dns happy, no one gets out... if i make inet
happy, dns isnt... everything is communicating with the

Make the DOMAIN (Internal) 'happy' first -- then forward
from there to the Internet.

Forwarding is set on the DNS server's properties using the
Forwarder tab.

In your local DNS server check to see if you have a "." Forward Lookup Zone,
if you do delete it.

hopefully this replies to all.. im just using IE... first
off, thank you for the replies... when i got herb's reply
i went into the dns to enable forwarding to the router,
and the checkbox to enable it was greyed out... is this a
prob? so unable to try that... after getting kevin's, i
removed the "." zone and voila'... thanks guys... :)

Well, that's a good deal, glad you got it working.

One more suggestion, don't forward to the router, but rather directly to
your ISP's DNS server. Eliminates an uneeded hop and makes it more
efficient.
