I just reloaded XP with SP2. I'd saved my emails to a separate drive. I
found the messages after a search and set the files to open with Adobe in
error. Exactly which program should dbx files be opened with in IE 6?

thank you.

Probably Outlook Express.

Outlook Express

They're Outlook Express files. They cannot be "opened": They must be
associated with an OE identity.

You can not use IE to open .dbx files. In fact, you should not have a file type
association with .dbx files (at least for .dbx files which are created by OE.)

What you can do with OE created .dbx files (which are not already in use by it)
is use OE's File, Import> Messages... dialog.

BTW if you need more help try checking in the OE General NG.
Cross-posting to it for convenience.

thank you.

See http://www.insideoe.com/backup/index.htm for well written instructions
on restoring messages from a backup. I hope your backup includes
Folders.dbx or it gets a lot harder.
