dbpoweramp problem: codec could not be opened

I've seen a few references to this problem on Usenet, but so far no
solutions.

I have dbpoweramp installed, with a number of codecs. So far, it has always
worked fine for me. But now when I try to convert a file, the programme
suddenly says 'The CODEC required to convert xxx could not be opened'. I
first noticed it when I tried to convert an mp3 to a WAV. I haven't checked
all the other formats, but trying out one or two seemed to suggest that the
problem is programme wide, i.e. it's not specific to the wav-writer plugin.

The required codecs are certainly available, and I've already tried
reinstalling the programme, but that doesn't help.

Does anybody have an idea what the problem might be?

Nope but if it is less than 5 days old you could probably fix it by reverting to an older, working registry. From DOS...
scanreg /restore

The problem? I don't know. I just noticed it yesterday, but I hadn't used
dbpoweramp in quite a while.
And the programme has been installed ages ago.

Hm. That seems rather drastic. (And if that's the only way the programme
can be got working, it seems to me it's rather poorly designed.)
Also, I haven't really kept conscious track of which other programmes I've
installed in the meantime, and I assume restoring the registry from a date
before I've installed them, will mess up *those* programmes.

Do you get an option about what to restore with that scanreg command?

Nope. It's all or nothing. What it does is restore the (complete)
registry. And you're right, if you have installed other programs since then,
it definitely might be problematic if you do decide to restore the system
registry - not the other program files.

Correct. One of which most likely is what screwed up dbPowerAMP.

Only about which old registry to restore. The system keeps five backups, replacing the oldest on first boot each day. The quantity kept can be changed by editing the scanreg.ini file in the
windows folder to include a maximum of 99. Change MaxBackupCopies=5 to 1 to 99

Restoring the registry does only that...it doesn't replace any missing/messed up system files. You have to run SFC to correct that.

There is no scanreg.ini on my hard disk.
(Maybe I should have specified that I have WinXP.)

When it happened to me the cable from my cd drive to the sound card was
disconnected. Can you play audio cd's ok?

Yes. In any case I wasn't trying to do anything involving cd's. I was
trying to convert files that are on the hard disk.

I think you jinxed me, now I'm having the same problem.
Hope you get it figured out.

Spooky.
DBPoweramp has a support forum, where I posted this question too. The only
suggestions made were to re-install &c.
Eventually that did solve the problem. Initially it hadn't, but the last
time I first uninstalled separately all the codecs I had installed, then
uninstalled the programme, then rebooted (I'm very lazy and impatient and
often think I can solve things by reinstalling without rebooting), then
re-installed the programme and some of the codecs (this time restricting
myself to those few that I knew I would actually be using, rather than
installing all the codecs I thought looked cool to have... :-). Now the
programme seems to be working as it should again. Hope this works for you
too.
