Lately, when I double click any file with a .doc extension, Word opens up
but the file contents do not appear. I get some standard message about the
system cannot locate the file. However, if I open word first then navigate
to the file and open it from within word, it opens fine.

Any idea what is wrong here????

You may just need to reregister Word. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm or do this:

Press Start | Run. Type

winword /r

and press Enter. Note that there is a space before the forward slash. Word
will not open, and it may appear that nothing is happening (or you may get a
message box), but this will reestablish Word's "ownership" of the .doc and
..dot file types in the Windows Registry, and you should then be able to open
them by double-clicking.
