Dazzle card reader limitation

Periodically I check to see if I can find driver updates for my Dazzle High
Speed USP 8-in-1 card reader.

I see drivers for older operating systems but not for Windows 2000 nor for
Windows XP. I have one at home and one at work, and use it to move data back
and forth. I use a 64 MB ScanDisk memory card. Back when they were real
expensive, I bought a 256 MB ScanDisk memory card so that I could move larger
files, but when I plug it in, it locks up whichever computer I use it with.

Any hope?

It should Plug 'n Play under WinME, Win2K and WinXP and not need drivers. When drivers are
included for memory card readers, it is often just to provide an icon to the different types
of memory cards for the respective drive letters.

So why does the one at home (with XP) and work (with W2K) both lock up when
I put in a 256MB card? I have tested it in a camera and it works fine.

It is a compatibility issue, not a driver issue.

I had a problem where my SanDisk SDDR-75 (Compact Flash and SmartMedia) would not read my
SanDisk Ultra II Compact Flash cards. I ended up buying NEW Compact Flash card readers. A
SDDR-91 a CF only USB v2.0 Reader and a SanDisk SDDR-86 USB v2.0 6-in-1 Reader. They read
my Ultra II 256MB and 1GB CF cards with no problem.

The SanDisk Ultra II cards are rated at 60x (9MB/s). SanDisk now makes the Extreme III CF
card rated at 133x (20MB/s). However it is now my understanding that if I get this card, I
will have to get two new readers since the SanDisk SDDR-86 6-in-1 reader won't read the
Extreme III at all and the SDDR-91 CF only reader won't see the full speed of the Extreme
III CF card.

The problem is that the incompatibility issues are unpublished and you must learn them as
you go along :-(

I have an early Lexar USB 2.0 Multicard Reader, it needed a
firmware upgrade to read 512 MB xD cards. Perhaps reader
has a firmware update too.

That's a possibility !

However, SanDisk lacks this ability -- which sucks.

I gave up, and went to CompUSA. There as a Kiosk full of Dazzle card
readers, but asking around, I found another brand. I bought a couple of
PNP readers that were specialized for ScanDisks only. I plugged it in, and
it works with my 64M card, but when I put in either the 256Mb card I bought
for this purpose, or the one that my camera has been using, it locks up my
computer.

I'll return these readers tomorrow.
