How can I add dates to my exsisting documents in word when they are printed without going back to each document and inserting them?

That's like saying, "How can I add a paragraph of boilerplate text to my
existing document when I print it without going back to the document and
adding it?" Although this could presumably done with a VBA batch command,
that would in effect have to open each document and insert the date (or
text). I think I see what you have in mind: when you print a Web page,
Internet Explorer adds a footer that contains the date. That's because it,
in effect, inserts the Web page into an existing template that contains the
date. You could do the same: create a new template with the date in the
footer or somewhere else, create a document based on that template, and use
Insert | File to insert your document, but I think you'd be disappointed
with the results, and it would be more work than just opening the document
and adding the date. If you want Word to use the date the document was
printed, insert a PrintDate field. For more, see

Do you mean, how do you have dates in a document that update automatically?
Word automatically records date created, date last saved, and date last
printed. You can insert fields to display these in the document.
