Dates changed in cells?

I have Excel 2000 version 9.0.2720 running in WinXP Pro.

I started creating a table and in some of the cells I entered in dates.
Everything was fine. Everything printed fine. I saved the file.

The next day I open up the file in Excel and found that all my coulmns had
resized to variuos widths AND,....the cells with dates in them changed to
curious numbers.

Example: 7/24/2003 has become 37826.

If I click on the cell the formula toolbar shows the correct info but the
cell doesn't. If I double click the cell it converts to the date I typed,
but as soon as I click out of the cell it changes back to the numbers.

What gives?

Hello Johnny,

Makes me think on the result of harmless viruses at work, changing only the
formatting of your sheets.(such kind of jokes were wide spread some ten
years ago). May be a virus check can be of help.
Unless you must look for any other reason for loss of format.

It kind of sounds like you're looking at formulas instead of values.

Try Tools|Options|View Tab
If Formulas is checked, then uncheck it.

There's a shortcutkey that toggles this setting. Maybe you hit it by mistake.

THAT WAS IT!

Thanks a million!

On my USA keyboard, it's ctrl-` (ctrl-backquote, backquote is to the left of
the 1/! key.)
