Date Taken disappeared?

when filing some photographs i noticed the "Date Taken" column from the
window is completely empty

for sure this was working properly previously

by checking the photos on my camera i notice that the 'Date Taken' property
is now being displayed in the "Date Modified" column ('date taken' column is
now empty) - which of course isn't the same at all

i do modify pictures before printing so it's important to keep both of these
properties

anyone noticed this problem before with Win XP - whats happened?

Sometimes editing software (when saving)
will strip the metadata from an image file.
Right click one of the images in question
and from the menu...choose...Properties /
Summary tab / Advanced button.

Now do the same on one of the images
that still display the Taken Date (for
comparison). You may find that much of
the original info is missing from the first file.

The following free program can be useful
to backup and restore metadata.

Exifer For Windows

Jethro,

Open the folder and right click on one of the column headers (The grey bit
not below it)

That should display a list of columns you can have, one of which may be
"Date Picture Taken" (It's there in W2003)

It is possible that the software in the camera sets both and that subsequent
editing only changes the one in the default display

i use WinXP drag/drop to copy the pictures over

i also notice the the picture still on my camera still dont display date
taken - but they certainly did - i think this is a windows issue (like
losing thumbnails issue) - i might have to reinstall XP - i'll have a look
at that ap though - thanks

i have the correct columns showing - its just that are displaying the wrong
properties - i think i'll need to reinstall win XP - it's lost it's way some
how

I would be quite surprised if WinXP stripped
the EXIF data from your image files. Are you
positive that you did not use any other software...
to edit or resize the images?

Try the following and maybe it will improve
the issue:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

In my own experience losing EXIF or IPTC data arises as a result of some
image processing programs. This is not all bad as some programs remove
metadata for web-publishing purposes.

There is a though that runs along the lines of: for critical images
never work on the single version of that image. Always work on a copy
of the original.

(It's not really an approach limited to photography and covers any data
files)

That's fixed it - thanx - i knew it wasn't editing software because the pics
on my camera were reporting the same and they haven't been edited at all -
thanx again

You're welcome.

Thanks for the update.
