Is there a way to set the underlying date to be now() with out seting a date
in the field it keeps a date of two months of 5 days ago i would like for it
to be today or 0/0/000 until it is unchekd an has a date in the record
--/--/-- would be better

You lost me on that so I'll just suggest you look at the default value for a
field.
 
When you set the value it set the time and adds that to the table
their is no default value but does apeers to have a default vale inherent.
