Date on photos

I need to find out how to get the "date" to print on the pictures I
print on my printer. I have a Canon camera and it explains how to do
it, but indicates that I must have a "Direct Print"compatible printer.
I've been to three stores and talked to the clerks, who look at me like
I'm crazy. One young lady, who appeared a little brighter than the rest
indicated that I needed a printer with "Pict-bridge" capability. I have
found a couple of printers that have this and am currently looking at an
HP 2575.

I would like for someone to confirm that this will do the job before I
leap off and buy the printer. Will appreciate some input!

Thanks--

According to the following article...
the smart young lady was correct:

PictBridge / Canon

BTW...Your Canon should have a
setting that will automatically add
the date to the face of each image.
This way...any printer would print
it but you could also see it when
sharing the images.

I don't know about Direct print or Pict-bridge so I will not comment on
this.
1. All digital cameras have a setting to automatically add the date to the
photos. You must set this from the menu according to your camera manual and
then when you open the file, the date will be added on the photo. Remember
that this is a permanent addition on top of the photo and you cannot remove
it. You can always clone it out with software but this can be tedious. Since
the date is part (on top) of the photo and you see it when you open the
file, any printer will print it when you print the photo.

2. If you have just a few photos to print and on which you want to add the
date and time, you can do it with free software. Download
www.irfanview.com
in a folder and then install it.
Open irfanview and open the photo you want.
1. Click with your mouse on the area of the photo where you want to add the
date and drag the mouse from this point to create a rectangle. Then click on
Edit on the top bar and click on Insert text. A box will open and just
select Append Date, Append Time etc as you want. Remember this will now be
part of the file. You can print from irfanview and then close the file
without saving the changes if you do not want this addition to be a
permanent part of the file.

Thank you both so much for the information. I guess I must be missing
something somewhere, and am just too dumb to see the problem!! My camera
is a Canon SD100 and I use two printers, and HP 1210 and an Epson. I
have followed the instructions carefully on the camera and have set the
date according to the instructions, pulled the shots into my computer
and when I select a picture for printing using a variety of Photo
editing programs(Picasa,Photo Impressions,PSP-9, etc--) I can select the
Properties(or hold down the left mouse button) and it shows the
Dimension, Date taken, Camera Model, Image Type,Size, etc. but when
printed the date does not show on the print! Obviously I'm missing
something somewhere. The date is in there, I just can't get it to print!
Yes Yves, I also use Irfanview and others for occasional titles, but I
don't want to do that for every snapshot.

I do appreciate your assistance, and I'll keep struggling!!

I downloaded and read the manual for your
camera and it does not have an option to
add the date to the image. You can read this
on page 29 of the manual.

However...it will print the date if you have
the correct printer. Look at page 7 of your
Direct Print User Guide. If you do not have
the guide...you can download a copy from
the Canon site.

PowerShot SD10 Download Library

Click...Product / Software Manuals...and you
will see what's available for download. If the
page fails to open...hold your Ctrl key and try
again.

FWIW...MS Digital Image Suite has an option
to add the date to images when in the Print
Multiple mode. All you have to do is check a
box on the last screen before the printing begins.

You can give the trial version a try if you wish:

Microsoft Digital Image Starter Edition 2006
is a downloadable 60 day trial version with
much of the functionality of MS Digital Image
Suite 2006.

Once your 60 day trial period has ended, the
program will de-feature to minimal functionality.

Unlike the retail version...the trial does not
have the ability to create VCDs and does
not support RAW files.

Be aware that it's a 109 MB download....

I can appreciate that you don't want to use irfanview to do this on every
picture. Tedious.
However, it has to be an option within this camera.
I don't know this camera but I will describe mine.
I have a Minolta A1. In my manual there is such a thing as "Data
Imprinting". On my Recording Menu, Data Imprint is Off, this is the default.
If I want to imprint the date, I can use YYYY/MM/DD or MM/DD/hr : min
options
When I select this option this info is added so that when I open the photo
file I see the date will be displayed on top of the photo and I just send it
to the printer.
I had this option on two previous Sony cameras and I did set it on a Kodak
camera for a friend, so I think it is just a matter of looking in your
camera manual and finding out how to turn this option from Off to On.

That's basically what I had determined, thus the basis of my original
query, i.e. will the HP 2575 meet this criteria?

Thanks so much for your efforts!

You folks have gone above and beyond the call of duty in trying to get
me straight and I really appreciate it!! At the moment I am stalled out
as for as "trying new things" 'cause my wife just left for a week in
Albuquerque, with camera in tow. I'm sure she will be back with a camera
full of pictures to be downloaded and printed, so I'll just have to wait
for her return and I'll take up where I left off!!

Thanks again, and have a great week-end!!

Personally, I would never purchase
an all-in-one machine. Issues can
sometimes develop with the drivers
that are very hard to correct.

I don't know anything about the HP
2575 printer you are interested in but
the following specs do not mention
PictBridge.

Perhaps you are right, but my wife is constantly copying and scanning
stuff and I don't have room for a separate scanner (used to, but when
she discovered the PSC machines, will not settle for anything else.)Am
now using an old HP 1210V that is still going strong. We have had three
over the past years and had never had any problem with them (except for
the print heads drying in an Epson)

It's interesting that some advertisements do not mention the
Pict-Bridge capability, while others do. I have actually looked at the
machine in three different stores (Best Buy, CompUSA, and Sam's) and it
does indeed have a USB port clearly marked "Pict-Bridge". It's
unfortunate that the sales persons had no idea what they were selling!!

I have several digital cameras, and none of them have an option to
overlay a date on the image. My wife has a Kodak which *does* offer
this option.

I think this is an "occasional" option, not an "always" option. ;-)
