Is there a way to tell the date of a website? ie when it was created and put
up. I find myself reading a webpage, then realize it is 3 years old.

Some servers (namely Apache though I think they no longer support this
feature) will allow you to right click on the page, select properties, and
will tell you the creation date. Now, more than ever, you see the same date
as today which is unfortunate. Some of the information that's three years
old is still valid and often as I'm scouring the 'net to find answers for
people in the newsgroups I'm on rather old pages because I like to help in
the 9x/ME groups as well. I add that only as an aside, I suppose if you're
looking for news or the like that's not really what you're interested in.
Google.com has a news function which will give you the time that the news
popped up.

No, I just find it very helpful to know how long a webpage has been around.
I can't believe that that feature would not be part of all web pages. You
are running on old information. An example of the problem it can create, I
was looking at an unfamiliar piece of software (website for it) the other
day, spent some time studying it on line, it was ver.7, found out later they
are up to ver. 11 now!! Also, reading an article which raised my eyebrows,
come to find out it was written before 9/11, and the info was all out of
date.

You'd think that it would be more common but it seems to have fallen to the
wayside as time has progressed. I have no idea why or who's idea it was to
do away with it. If I recall it is still an option with Apache but it's no
longer on by default and few people seem interested in changing their server
settings from default but rather are more interested in making money from
selling hosting.
