Date Formula changes

I created a excel spread sheet which I emailed to someone at another
location and after they received it a cell which had the date format changed
to a custom format. I have run across similar problems before with the same
issue, can anyone tell me why this happens and how can I fix it?
 
Are both you and your email recipient using the same versions of Excel?

I have excel 2002 (10.6501.6714) SP3 and the other location has excel 2002
(10.2614.2625)

What sort of change? From what to what?

Are regional options setttings the same on both computers?

Are Tools>Options>Calculation "1904 date system" options the same?

The regional options settings are the same on both computers, neither
computer has 1904 date system checked and the other options are the same. I
formatted the cell as "date" and *3/14/2001 and when I sent it the format
was set in the same cell as "custom" and
d-mmm.

You may have been hit by a coincidence.

When you do Format|cells|Number tab and look at that cell's format, I'm betting
you see something like:

*03/14/2001

That asterisk means that you chose a short date format that is picked up from
the Windows Regional settings (Date tab).

xl2002+ is more honest with the way it deals with dates.

At the bottom of that dialog (xl2002):

Date formats display date and time serial numbers as date values. Except for
items that have an asterisk (*), applied formats do not switch date orders with
the operating system.

Since yours is marked with an asterisk, your date will switch formats with the
setting in the OS.

And maybe that other user is using a different short date format (in their
windows regional settings).
