Date Format in Mail Merge Word XP

I am having problems with Dates in word as described by KB

WD2002: Month and Day are Not Displayed in the Order You
Expect in a Mail Merge Document Linked to an External Data

This is an OEM version I have from DELL and I am reluctant
to phone Dell, as I normally have to wait 30 minutes
before speaking with someone and then they disown the
problem.

Are there any other work rounds.
