I have Access 2000 SP3 (Actually it's office) with the latest version of
Jet running under windows XP professional.

The problem I'm having is that if I enter a date into a date field it
won't pick up the date format from the control panel. e.g. 03/09/2003 is
set to be 03 Sept 2003 but entering 03/09/2003 in a date field in Access
sees it as 09 Mar 2003.

I also have this problem in Excel, so I know it isn't just Access but
I'm wondering if there's a service pack I need to make office 2000 work
correctly in XP. Can anyone help?

Glenn.

Glenn, it sounds like you the wrong setting for your dates in the Windows
Control Panel.

Open Control Panel | Regional Settings | Date.
Change Short Date to:
dd/mm/yyyy
and Long Date to:
d mmmm yyyy
Access should not respect this setting in your text boxes (assuming you have
not placed anything in the Format property of the text box on the form, or
the Format property of the field in your table).

For further info. on the cases where Access can misunderstand your date
format, see:

I've just read that article. Firstly, This is not a new database, it was
running fine on Windows ME, It's been upgraded to XP. It's language
settings are En (United Kingdom) so I'm guessing that the 'medium' date
format is the UK version which would be having the day bit before the month.

One point to note is that the Format drop down list box against the date
fields in Access gives various date formats but those of note are:

Short Date: 19/06/1994
Medium Date: 19-Jun-94
Long Date: 19 Jun 1994

So why does it still take 03/09/2003 as if I'd typed 09 Mar 2003
directly into the field?

Thanks

Glenn.

19/6/1994 cannot be interpreted as anything but 19 June, because there is no
19th month.

3/9 can be interpreted either way, depending on the regional settings. You
say your language setting is "En", but did you check your Date settings (on
the Date tab under Regional Options in Control Panel)? I'm in Australia, and
have used dd/mm/yy settings with every version of Access since 1, so it is
possible. If it's still playing up, then something else is happening here.
