How can I get Excel (or is it even possible) to have a
date say 01 Feb 1876 be treated like a date in Excel. It
appears to be having trouble doing so. I know that the
first day for Excel is 01 Jan 1900, but is this causing me
the trouble?

Thanks in advance,
Paul.

It isn't possible. The earliest date that Excel will recognize as a date is Jan 1 1900 (or 1904
if you're using that system). You must enter the data as text, then use John Walkenbach's VBA
routines to do any needed date arithmetic. You've been given the link to his site.

Or use a different application. OpenOffice Calc (so presumably also StarOffice
Cals) handles dates before 1/1/1900, but I haven't checked how it deals with
dates before adpotion of the Gregorian calendar.
