Date and time stamps

When I capture an .avi file from my MiniDV camera using WMM this software has
detected the scene changes in the tape. Although the tape is saved as one
file, there must be some sort of scene division marker inserted into the .avi
file produced (although my Nero software does not recognize the markers when
editing the .avi file, another mystery to me).
In the WMM window where the first frame of each scene is shown in
chronological order, each scene has a date and time next to it which
reflects the date and time stamp put on the tape by the camera when the
footage was shot. Thus WMM can read the time and date stamps from the tape,
and puts them into the .avi file. However from what I've read you need third
party software to get the time and date to be shown on the footage contained
in the .avi file.
Is this correct?
Does the .avi file captured with WMM know the date and time of each frame,
but hides it?
I think I can manually add date and time to each scene start (laborious to
say the least), but the product is a WMV file, which I think is useless to me
for use with other software packages.
Can I edit the .avi file so it shows date and time, either automatically or
as someone suggested manually (show it at each scene start then fade it out)?
I thought manipulating time and date stamps would be simple, I'm starting to
suspect I was very wrong.

Although Movie Maker uses the time code information contained in the DV AVI
files (capture by itself or otherwise), it has no capability to show it over
the footage. You need the other software for this.

When you save a DV AVI file after editing it in MM (see below), the timecode
is no longer there.

To save as movie, use menu File -> "Save MOVIE As", or press key Ctrl-P or
use the "Save to my computer" under "Finish Movie" step on the left hand
task bar.

In the Save Movie wizard, first screen allows you to select a name for
the saved movie and the next screen is "Movie Settings". Click on "Show
more options..." and you will have all the different options to select.
Select DV AVI from the drop down box and complete the remaining steps.

"When you save a DV AVI file after editing it in MM (see below), the
timecode is no longer there."

Are you sure about this?
I've saved DV AVI files after MM editing, re-imported them, created clips,
and the time stamps are still there.
WMV files may be a different story, but I typically never save any thing as
WMV.
