Hi I tried what you suggested below. But I still can't
seem to get it to work. I have a shortcut to my database
on my desktop, do you have any other suggestions

Thanks

I tried to set a password to my database. When I try to
open in and click set database password it tells me I
must close the database and then on the file menu click
open and then the arrow to the right click exculsive.
There is no arrow besdie open???
.
It can be confusing because you must first go to Access,
highlight the file but do not double click or put in the
filename. Then the Open command will have an arrow.
..

What has the shortcut got to do with it?

You must start Access as an independent program (eg. from Start :
Programs). *Not* by double-clicking the database file, or using the
shortcut.

Then use the Access File:Open command to open the database. I don't
have Access here to check, but I imagine the Access File:Open screen
will have the "open exclusive" option you need.

if you want to open it exclusive and have a shortcut, one
option is to put the exclusive trigger in the shortcut.
Right click your shortcut and go to properties. then click
in the field named target. at the end of the string
type /excl. That will allow the shortcut to open the DB
exclusive every time. So after your changes to the
password, go back in and take that out of the shortcut if
you don't wish to always open it exclusively.

Yes, that would work. Rather than changing the shortcut each time, you could
have two of them: one for exclusive, one not.

I believe the OP is just double-clicking the database file, or using a
normal (non-exclusive) shortcut. But as she hasn't replied, we will never
know :-)
