Database password problem

I am opening an Access application exclusively. Nevertheless, I am getting a
message "You need to have the database open for exclusive use to set up or
unset the database password'.

How this situation can be troubleshooted?

How are you opening it exclusively?

Open Access, go to File, Open. Select the mdb and in the lower left of the
dialog be sure to click the drop down and choose Open Exclusive.
 
Thank you for your reply. I open my database the way you described. Later I
figured out what the problem was. In Options/Advanced the default open mode
was set to Exclusive. This is why when I went to File, Open in the drop down
box the Open Exclusive choice was already checked. When I selected this
choice I have not been able to unset the password. The solution is to change
the default open mode to Shared. After that the security feature performs as
expected.
