Does anyone have any experience using the data recovery utilities from
Runtime software.? I'm wondering if it would work on a machine that
the OS was reloaded about 2 years ago. The individual would like to
recover the files from his original "my documents folder". The bad
news is, this person has been using the machine for the last 2 years
and saving documents on it.

He's not missed them in two years, why on earth would he miss them now?!

This person is a lawyer, so I guess the files are valuable. I have to
beleive the person did not know how to approach the problem.

It's irrelevant which folder they were in, the odds are very high
that the space once occupied by those files has long-since been
reused by (anything written to the drive), making any typical
software recovery impossible.

You might suggest to this fellow that while his files are gone,
if he'd make backups they could still be available (hinting that
NOW would be a good time to start making backups if he hasn't
already).

I read it as he has cluttered it up by saving other things in it,
until it is an unholy mess. If so the dates on the files will
isolate them nicely. By using such things as 4dos command
processor, or the sd utility, he can easily sort them out by
date. With 4dos he can easily write a btm (batch) file to copy
those predating any given date. Another possible utility is
xxcopy (see <http://xxcopy.com>) to filter them out.

This may require him to learn about the command line.
