I have a couple of old hard drives that I would like to get the data
off of. Is there an easy way (for me, with computers, nothing is
easy) to connect the drive to my existing computer? How about an
adapter that plugs into a USB port?
If you're comfortable opening the case of your computer, the simplest thing
to try would be shutting down your computer and powering off, then
connecting the drive to a power cable and drive cable just like the other
drive that's in there. There should be one or more free power connectors -
just plug it in - and one or more free drive cable connectors - again just
plug it in. Both have to go in the right way, but almost all are fitted
these days so they will only go in one way. Then start up your computer and
there should be a new drive letter for it. Just look in Windows Explorer to
find it.
If that doesn't work - if you can't find it - then you will have to change
the settings on the drive as the other poster said - master vs. slave, etc.
You can come back and ask for more then.
